Mirror Item — TroubleshootingHow can we help?
Common Mirror Item issues and how to fix them.
All fixes, step by step
Items are not syncing
A mirrored item is not updating when the source item changes.
Common causes
- The mirror connection was removed or reset after a board change.
- The source item was moved to a different group or board.
- A column was renamed or its type changed, so it no longer matches across boards.
- The account hit the free plan limit of 5 mirrored items.
How to fix it
- Open the item on the source board and click the Mirror Item app panel.
- Check that the target board and group are still selected. If the fields are blank, the connection was lost — re-configure it.
- Check the columns still match. Columns sync by name and type, so if a column was renamed or deleted on either board, rename it back or match it on the other board.
- If you are on the free plan, check your mirrored item count. Items above the 5-item limit will not sync.
- Save the configuration again and trigger a manual sync by making a small edit to the source item.
Tip: If the issue started after a board restructure (renaming groups, moving items), re-saving the mirror config is usually all it takes.
Mirrored columns are not populating
The item mirrors but certain column values are empty or not carrying over.
Common causes
- The column type on the source board does not match the target board.
- The column is named differently on one board, or it was excluded from sync for this item.
- Some column types (e.g. Formula, Auto Number) are read-only and cannot be mirrored.
- The Connect Boards column has not been auto-filled yet.
How to fix it
- Open Mirror Item on the item and look at the common columns in the Where this item lives table.
- Check that each column you expect to sync exists on the target board with exactly the same name, including capitals.
- Check the column types match. A Status column syncs with a Status column, not a Text column.
- Formula and Auto Number columns are computed by monday.com and cannot be written by apps. These columns cannot be mirrored.
- For Connect Boards columns, enable the Auto-fill Connect Boards Column setting inside Mirror Item to populate them automatically.
- Re-save the mirror and make a change to the source item to trigger a fresh sync.
Tip: The most common cause is a name or type mismatch. People columns sync with People columns, Status with Status, and so on.
Automations are not triggering
A Mirror Item automation recipe is saved but not firing when conditions are met.
Common causes
- Automations are available on the Standard plan and above — the Basic plan does not include them.
- The trigger condition (e.g. Status column value) does not exactly match what was configured.
- The automation was saved but not activated.
- A filter on the automation is blocking it from running.
How to fix it
- Confirm your account is on the Standard plan or above. Go to Mirror Item settings and check your plan tier.
- Open the automation recipe and verify the trigger column and value match exactly what you are testing. Status labels are case-sensitive.
- Check that the automation is toggled on — a saved automation is not the same as an active one.
- If you have added filters (e.g. "only run if Assignee is X"), make sure the item meets all filter conditions.
- Test with a simple trigger first (no filters) to confirm the automation runs at all, then add filters back one at a time.
Tip: Status-based triggers are the most common cause of confusion. "In Progress" and "in progress" are treated differently — match the label exactly as it appears on the board.
Subitems are duplicating
Subitems appear more than once on the target board after mirroring.
Common causes
- Subitem sync is enabled in Mirror Item while subitems are also being mirrored manually.
- The mirror was triggered multiple times for the same item (e.g. via automation and manually).
- An automation is set to run on subitem changes and is creating new mirrors on each update.
How to fix it
- Check whether you have subitem sync enabled inside Mirror Item settings AND a separate manual mirror set up for the same subitems. Use one approach only.
- Delete the duplicate subitems on the target board.
- Open Mirror Item on the parent item and confirm subitem sync is either on or off — not both configured via different methods.
- If you are using an automation to mirror subitems, make sure the trigger fires once per item, not once per subitem update.
- Re-save the parent item mirror to reset the subitem sync state.
Tip: The easiest fix is to turn on subitem sync inside Mirror Item settings and remove any manual subitem mirrors. Let the app handle it in one place.
