How to build a master board in monday.com

A master board rolls up items from every team board into one place. Here is how to build one where the items are real and editable, not read-only reflections.

What is a master board?

A master board, sometimes called a board of boards or an overview board, is a single board that shows items from many other boards in one view. Leaders track everything in one place, while each team keeps working in its own board.

The native way, and why it falls short

monday.com’s native options are Connect Boards plus Mirror Columns. They reflect data onto a master board, but the reflected values are read-only: they cannot trigger automations, be used in formulas, or be edited from the master board. Building one is also a manual, multi-step setup for every field you want to see.

Build a master board with Mirror Item

1

Install Mirror Item Multiple Boards

Add the app from the monday.com marketplace. There is a free plan to start.

2

Add items to your master board

Mirror items from each team board onto one master board, or set an automation recipe so new items mirror automatically.

3

Let common columns sync

Matching columns sync automatically and both ways. Edit on any board and it updates everywhere.

4

Turn on the Board Names dropdown

On the master board, enable the Board Names dropdown to see at a glance which boards each item lives on.

Why this beats mirror columns

  • The master board holds the real item, so you can edit it there and everywhere.
  • Automations, formulas and conditions work on every field.
  • Two-way sync keeps every board current without manual updates.
  • The Board Names dropdown shows where each item lives, right in the board view.
